10040 GLENMERE ROAD RESIDENCE Fairfax, Virginia

BURRELL ARCHITECTS.

This project explores the transformation and expansion of an existing single-family home located in a quiet residential setting in Fairfax, Virginia. The design focuses on a thoughtfully integrated second-floor addition that enhances the home’s functionality while respecting its original scale, character, and relationship to the surrounding neighborhood.

Multiple exterior elevation studies were developed to evaluate massing, roof forms, and façade articulation. These options balance traditional residential language with contemporary refinement, introducing new volumes, expanded fenestration, and improved proportions while maintaining a cohesive architectural identity.

The proposed second-floor plan reconfigures private living spaces to improve circulation, natural light, and spatial efficiency. Bedrooms and support spaces are carefully arranged to maximize usability and comfort, with clear transitions between public and private zones. The addition is designed to sit naturally atop the existing structure, minimizing visual impact while significantly expanding livable area.

This project demonstrates a design approach rooted in clarity, restraint, and craft, using precise hand-drawn studies to iteratively refine both plan and elevation solutions. The result is a residential addition that feels intentional, well-scaled, and seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the existing home.
