Virginia Gateway Retail Center

Virginia Gateway Retail Center

Gainesville, Virginia

Virginia Gateway Retail Center is a large-scale retail development that serves as a prominent commercial destination within the rapidly growing Gainesville community. The project features a diverse mix of national retailers, restaurants, and service-oriented tenants organized within a cohesive architectural framework that enhances visibility, accessibility, and the overall customer experience.

The design process began with a series of conceptual hand sketches exploring storefront organization, building massing, roof forms, and pedestrian scale. These early studies established the architectural vision for the center and provided a foundation for evaluating tenant relationships, circulation patterns, and overall site character. The concepts were then translated into CAD, where I refined and manipulated the exterior building elements to develop the project’s massing, architectural character, material palette, scale, and visual hierarchy.

A significant aspect of the design involved carefully integrating tenant requirements into a unified architectural composition. Special attention was given to tenant frontage, storefront proportions, signage locations, and visibility from both pedestrian and vehicular approaches. The challenge was to create a retail environment that allowed individual tenants to maintain their identity while contributing to a cohesive and recognizable destination.

The resulting design balances tenant flexibility, strong branding opportunities, and architectural continuity, creating an inviting retail environment that contributes to the commercial vitality of the surrounding community.

This project was designed and completed while Harry Burrell was employed with BWH Architects, Annapolis, Maryland.
